Jarod Gonzales to play for Sweets again next summer

WALLA WALLA – The Walla Walla Sweets have announced the first signings of the 2014 season bringing back infielders Jarod Gonzales and John Skrbec, and catcher Renae Martinez.

All three players were part of the 2013 Sweets team that won the North Division pennant.

Gonzales, a 5-foot, 11-inch 190 pound infielder is a sophomore from Walla Walla Community College. A native of Kennewick, he appeared in 46 regular-season games for the Sweets last season, smacking three home runs, six doubles and two triples. As a freshman at WWCC, Gonzales batted .352 with 15 doubles, 11 home runs, and 46 RBI’s. He was named 1st-Team East Region, 1st-Team All-NWAACC and to the 3rd-Team Pacific Association Division All-American Team.

Martinez, a native of San Pedro, Calif., is a sophomore at UC Irvine. The 6-foot 1-inch, 185-pound catcher hit .308 last season with four doubles, two home runs, and 15 RBI, and was one of nine Sweets selected to the 2013 WCL All-Star game in Victoria, B.C.

Skrbec, a junior at North Dakota State, is a 6-1, 185-pound infielder. Last season he hit .261 with 10 doubles, two triples, and five home runs.

The Sweets open the 2014 season on June 5 at Borleske Stadium with an alumni game in honor of the team’s fifth season.
