Warriors sweep Prairie Baseball Academy

Walla Walla Community College took advantage of sunny skies to run its season baseball record to 8-5 Sunday at Warriors Field with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Prairie Baseball Academy.

The Warriors, who were rained out Saturday at home vs. Linn-Benton Community College, won Sunday’s opener 5-2 and then rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the nightcap to claim an 8-6 victory.

Caleb Burnham and Sebastian Elu teamed up to pitch WWCC to victory in the first game. Burnham tossed six shutout innings and Elu two before Prairie plated its only two runs in the ninth.

“Caleb and Sebastian both threw the ball well,” WWCC coach Dave Meliah said. “We only had one rough inning and that was due to our only defensive misplay.”

Sean Coffey collected three of the Warriors’ eight hits in the game and Cooper Larson had two hits, one run scored and an RBI. Kealan Martin scored a pair of runs and Brian O’Rourke, Justin Macdonald and Quentin Lafontaine each knocked in a run.

Dalton Wells collected three of Prairie’s six hits in the opener.

Danny Robinson led the way for the Warriors in the nightcap as he doubled, singled twice and scored three times. Coffey had a single and a double, scored once and drove home a run. And Jordan Lester and Macdonald drove home two runs each.

“Sean Coffey swung the bat well all day,” Meliah said. “And Danny Robinson had a great day offensively in the second game. He really set the tone for our hitters.

“It was great to see us overcome some early adversity and find a way to come back and win that game.”

Torin Vaselenak homered and drove home three runs for Prairie and Jarret Semeniak had three hits and two RBIs.

The Warriors will host two more non-league doubleheaders this weekend. Olympic comes to town Saturday and Clark Sunday, with each set scheduled for an 11 a.m. first pitch.
