Warrior men go 1-2 at Red Devil Classic

12/1/13

LONGVIEW, Wash. — Jeff Reinland still isn’t sure which of his Warrior men’s basketball teams is the real deal, the one that set a school record here Friday by making 23 3-point baskets or the one that for the second night in a row was stone cold from downtown in Sunday’s 73-64 loss to Southwest Oregon in the consolation round of the Red Devils Classic.

The Warriors shot 33 percent overall from the field and were a 6-for-39 from 3-point distance, 15 percent, as they saw their early season record dip to 1-2 in the battle for the tournament’s third-place trophy.

That was in stark contrast to Friday when WWCC shot lights out — 23-for-45 — from the 3-point arc in defeating Centralia 116-84 in the first round of the tournament. Walla Walla cooled off considerably Saturday when it was 7-for-35 from downtown in a 99-86 semifinal loss to Yakima.

“The hard part is they were all pretty good shots,” Reinland said. “We took a few bad ones, but for the most part we were wide open in all three games. If anything, we were more contested the first night.

“Overall we played really well the entire weekend, but that’s the problem with basketball. You can do everything well, but if the ball doesn’t go in the hoop ….”

Southwest Oregon wasn’t any better than the Warriors from long range. Worse, in fact, as the Lakers made just 1-of-16 3-point attempts.

The difference was at the free-throw line where Southwest Oregon made 26-of-36 tries and Walla Walla made it to the line just 10 times, sinking six.

Satchel Schetzle led the Warriors with 19 points and Austin Nooner scored 13 points to go with a team-high 10 rebounds.

The Warriors open their home schedule this weekend as they host the annual Warriors Classic.
