Walla Walla, WA – Big Bend Community College came out red hot in the second half here Saturday afternoon against Walla Walla Community College, shooting 68 percent, 23-of-34, from the field over the last 20 minutes to defeat the Warriors, 94-86.

“We got down 11 early, but came back to lead by five at the half,” WWCC coach Jeff Reinland said. “We led by four or five until the last four or five minutes.”

Brendan Westendorf led the Vikings down the stretch and scored 28 points for the game.

“We couldn’t stop them in our man (defense),” Reinland said. “We went zone and stopped them most of the game. Westendorf took over the game at the end. He will play (Division I) and is hard to stop.”

The Warriors didn’t shoot badly, connecting on 30-of-67 (45 percent) shots from the field for the game, but went cold down the stretch.

“We had looks but they didn’t go down,” Reinland said. “We gave them open looks and they made the shots.”

Satchel Schetzle led the Warriors with 26 points and five assists. Prince Lacey hit five 3s and finished with 15 points. Dallas Reich chipped in 12 and Joel Underdaho added 10. WWCC drops to 3-3 in the East Region with the loss.

“Give Big Bend credit, they have good players and are hard to stop,” Reinland added. “It’s the third time we’ve been in a position to win, and just didn’t finish. We struggle with defensive intensity. I have to find a way to get them to respond.”

The Warriors travel to Columbia Basin College in Pasco Wednesday.
