BELLEVUE, Wash. — Walla Walla gave Chemeketa a taste of its own medicine here Sunday during the third-place game at the Bellevue men’s community college crossover basketball tournament.
The Warriors fired up 49 3-point shots, drained 20 of them and withstood a late Storm rally for a 106-103 victory. The Walla Wallans evened their season record at 4-4 in the process.
“Believe it or not, I thought we defended really well,” WWCC coach Jeff Reinland said. “We gave up 103 points, but they came into the game averaging 113 points a game. They are very talented offensively, and we held them down for a long part of the game.”
The Warriors’ defense combined with their hot 3-point shooting enabled them to build a 97-80 lead with six minutes remaining in the game. That’s when the Storm stormed back.
“We missed the front end of three one-and-ones, we missed a couple of wide open 3-point shots, and we had a couple of turnovers,” Reinland said. “And they were playing like they had nothing to lose.
“They got to the free-throw line and made a couple of really deep 3s. They have guys who can shoot the ball with anybody that I have ever had here at WWCC.”
The Storm drew within 104-103 with 12 seconds remaining. The Warriors’ Nate Richards was fouled with seven seconds to play and made both free throws for a three-point advantage.
“It was still a one-possession game,” Reinland said. “They advanced the ball to mid-court and called timeout with 4.9 seconds left, but when they inbounded we played really good defense. They fumbled the ball and the best they could get was a 35-foot desperation shot that wasn’t close.”
Prince Lacey came off the WWCC bench to score 29 points on 10-for-18 shooting from the floor, including 9-for-16 from 3-point distance. Dallas Reich added 21 points, Satchel Schetzle and Seth Alden scored 16 points each and Caleb Bravard finished with 15.
Chemeketa’s Bryce White led all scorers with 30 and Adam Westfall added 21 on 8-for-8 shooting from the field overall, five of them 3-pointers.
The Warriors will host an eight-team crossover tournament this weekend. Walla Walla faces Grays Harbor Friday night at 8, preceded by Highline vs. Blue Mountain at 2 p.m., Linn-Benton vs. Bellevue at 4 and Olympic vs. Umpqua at 6.#“It’s a good field,” Reinland said. “Not as good as the one we were just in, but any time you play an NWAACC team they are going to be decent not matter what their record might be.”
