Late goal lifts Columbia Basin men past Warriors

PASCO — A late goal in the 88th minute snapped a scoreless draw, and handed Walla Walla Community College a 1-0 loss to Columbia Basin in a pivotal men’s soccer showdown here on Wednesday.

Having already clinched a spot in the conference championship tournament, the Warriors (11-5-0 overall, 8-4-0 in the East) finished their regular season in third place — only one point behind CBC (8-3-1) in regional standings.

“It was disheartening,” Warriors coach Ben Rotert said. “We would have been fine with a draw. I though we played well for most of the game until an unlikely goal, but we had our chances. We missed some opportunities. Sometime that happens.”

The result forces Walla Walla out to Port Angeles, Wash., for a first-round playoff at Peninsula College next Wednesday — the Pirates (11-2-4 overall) placed second in the North — while CBC stays home to host Everett.

“Hopefully, we can respond with another chance in the playoffs,” Rotert said. “We’re excited about that.”
