VANCOUVER, Wash. — Missael Lopez and his Walla Walla Community College teammates continued their early scoring ways Saturday, but this time they continued to pound the back of the net in a 5-0 men’s soccer victory over Clark Community College.
Lopez scored his third goal of the season at the 7:03 mark, firing a left-footed shot into the goal, then tallied again 40 seconds later from 10 yards out on an assist from Miguel Rodriguez. Christian Torres assisted on a Rodriguez goal at the 29-minute mark, with Rodriguez burying the ball in the back of the net with a 12-yarder off the near post. Second-half goals by Luis Perez (assisted by Alejandro Espana) and Alex Sotelo rounded out the attack for WWCC, which outshot the host Penguins 17-9.
The Warriors, now 3-1-0, also scored early in a 1-0 Friday win versus Lane Community College in Eugene, Oregon. Lopez again provided the goal.
“I was really excited about how we started the match,” coach Ben Rotert said after Saturday’s shutout. “This is the third match in a row where we have scored within the first eight minutes.
“It’s great to start that way and instantly put teams on their back foot.”
The Warriors suffered a few injuries in Friday’s match with Lane, Rotert said, and “had to play a couple of guys out of position. They responded and stepped up big time to help the team get another shutout and, most importantly, another win.”
WWCC returns to the pitch at noon this Wednesday for a home match against Edmonds.
“The team is really coming together and I’m very proud of their work and determination to win as a unit,” Rotert said.
