HILLSBORO — Walla Walla survived a pair of overtime periods and a shootout here Saturday afternoon to notch a 3-2 victory over Portland in a Northwest Athletic Conference men’s soccer quarterfinal match at Hillsboro Stadium.
The Warriors, who improved to 12-5-1 on the season with Saturday’s win, will compete in an NWAC semifinal match next weekend.
WWCC prevailed despite a two-goal effort by the Panthers’ Daniel Betancourt, who broke a scoreless tie in the 51st minute of play and produced an equalizing goal in the 80th minute.
Walla Walla tied the score on an unassisted goal by Freddy Rodriguez in the 53rd minute, then took a 2-1 edge at the 73-minute mark on an Enrique Leal goal.
The teams went through a pair of overtime periods before the Warriors claimed the shootout by a 5-4 edge.
