PORTLAND — The Walla Walla Community College softball team ran into big bats at the NWAACC Tournament and couldn’t muster enough offense to stay with their two opponents on Saturday.
The Warriors fell to Mount Hood, 7-1, and were blasted, 14-0, by Treasure Valley in five innings. The losses spelled the end of the season for the Warriors.
The Warriors stayed close, as they trailed 3-1 in bottom of the fourth of game one. Mount Hood went on to score four unanswered runs en route to the six-run win.
WWCC threw Hanna DeBaugh, Jamie Moe and Miranda Smith against Treasure Valley. The Warriors’ offense could only muster two hits in the game.
Walla Walla had a great start to tournament as the Warriors downed Centralia, 11-5, and Douglas, 4-3.
Against Centralia, the Warriors started out strong offensively, scoring four runs in the first two innings of play. Centralia was able to rally back with four of their own in the bottom of the second, but after that it was all Warriors as they knocked in seven more runs in the next three innings.
Brook Simpson led the offensive explosion with three hits, as Sam Robillard added a triple and Miranda Smith blasted a home run. Centrialia did their best to keep up offensively with eight hits of their own including a home run from outfielder Lauren Fisher. Freshman pitcher Jamie Moe was able to keep the Trailblazers contained after the first two innings as she did not surrender another run until the game was long decided.
The second game was a more hotly contested affair with Douglas coming up just short in their comeback attempt in the seventh inning. Walla Walla again jumped out to an early lead before allowing their opponents back into the game.
The combination of Moe and Stephanie Snow continued their successful run as the pitching-catching duo as Moe only surrendered three runs in seven innings against Douglas.
“Jamie was dominant in both games and freshman catcher Stephanie Snow called two great games,” WWCC coach Mark Michaud said.
“We played solid defense in both games,” Michaud added. “Over the past two weeks we have been concentrating on having quality at-bats and the girls have really brought it in.
