WWCC Softball rolls to sweep of Columbia Basin

PASCO — Walla Walla Community College won a Northwest Athletic Conference softball doubleheader here at Columbia Basin on Wednesday.

The Warriors rallied in the seventh inning to force extras before pulling off a 7-4 win in nine in the opener, and then completed the sweep with a 7-0 victory in the nightcap.

“We had a great fighting spirit, coming back to take the first game,” WWCC coac Justin Speer said. “Thing weren’t going that great for us early on. We made some costly mistakes, but then we were able to get back in it, get some momentum, and do what we needed to do.”

The sweep gave second-place Walla Walla (26-12 overall, 21-9 in the East) some cushion to its lead over North Idaho (18-10) in regional standings, with the regular season wrapping up this weekend.

The Warriors play a doubleheader at Spokane on Saturday, while North Idaho hosts Yakima for two games and then first-place Wenatchee for a twin bill on Sunday.

“We’ll have a couple of important games on Saturday,” Speer said. “Now we’ve got second place alone to ourselves, so if we win them both, that’s where we’ll finish the regular season. Otherwise, there’s some other games going on that could have an impact.”
