Close Game, Big Win for Warriors in Spokane
Atkins, Ramos, Holecek, and Arland Carry the Load In Warriors' Victory
Walla Walla, WA. - Coach Jeff Reinland and the Walla Walla Community College Men's Basketball program opened up NWAC East Region play on Wednesday evening in Spokane, WA - taking on the Sasquatch of Spokane Community College. The Warriors had been one of the teams off to a very hot start, and led the entire NWAC in scoring through the preseason schedule. The Warriors hit the road Wednesday afternoon to head to Spokane to try to keep that going.
The first half saw the Warriors scoring about as even across the board as it has been this season, having no starters break double digits, but having each starter score at least 6 points in the first 20 minutes of play. Within that, the Warriors were off to a slow shooting start compared to the rest of their season. After the first half of play, the Warriors were down by 3, shooting 45% from the field and only 17% from the three point line. Tyler Newbold led the way for the Warriors in the first half, scoring all 9 of his points on the evening on 3-5 shooting in just 12 minutes.
The Warriors came out on fire in the second half. Starting the half down 38-35, the Warriors' big three of Austin Ramos, Trey Arland, and Luke Holecek really got it going. Each of the three put together double-digit second half scoring efforts, with Holecek leading the way with 15 points. The Warriors pieced together a 52-point second half, outscoring the Sasquatch by 10 to overcome the early deficit and win the game 87-80.
Luke Holecek finished with 21 points (9-16), 11 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 blocks. Austin Ramos scored 20 points (6-12), grabbed 14 rebounds, dished out 4 assists, and also added 2 steals. Trey Arland, the NWAC's leading scorer at 26.3 PPG, scored 19 points (7-14) while grabbing 8 rebounds. Trayce Atkins also had a big night for the Warriors, scoring 16 points on 8-15 shooting while adding 2 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals.
The Warriors are now 1-0 in NWAC East Region play and 12-3 overall. Their next game will be against Blue Mountain Community College on January 11th, 2025, at home in the Dietrich Activity Center.
