WWCC Men's Basketball Holds Off Late Spokane Run to Win First East Region Contest
Walla Walla, WA - A second half run by Spokane made things interesting, but the Walla Walla Community College Men's Basketball team was able to persevere and come out with a 93-88 victory over Spokane in their first NWAC East matchup of the season. Following last night's win, the Warriors move to 9-7 overall and 1-0 in NWAC East play on the season.
A major story from the contest was the tight officiating that kept both teams in check as 44 total fouls were called in the game, resulting in 33 total free throw attempts for Spokane and 19 attempts for Walla Walla. This also forced both coaching staffs to have to get creative as they managed foul trouble and keeping guys on the floor in the close, late minutes. In the end, a 34/79 (43%) shooting night from the field, including 30.3% from behind the arc and 78.9% from the stripe, was enough to give Walla Walla the edge and help them pull off the win. The Warriors also claimed the advantage in rebounding, finishing with 42 to Spokane's 36, and winning the turnover battle by only surrendering 9 in the game.
Hudson Floyd played all 40 minutes for the Warriors en route to a career high, and game leading, 24 points on 9/18 shooting including 4/9 from 3-point territory. The freshman from Spokane would also add 10 assists, 2 rebounds, and a steal to his effort to round out the double-double. Floyd was joined by the four other Warrior starters who all finished in double figures: Trebor Edwards (18), Tanner Goldsmith (14), Braden Sherrill (13), and Drew Hottinger (12). Tanner Goldsmith had a monster night on the glass, finishing with 18 rebounds, including 5 offensive rebounds.
What's next?
The Warriors will head to Blue Mountain Community College on Saturday to take on the Timberwolves. They will kick off the mens/women's doubleheader with tip off slated for 2 PM.
