Women's Basketball Picks Up Two More Wins at Shoreline Crossover
Warriors Go 2-1 at Shoreline Crossover, Improve to 7-2
Walla Walla, WA - Coach Bobbi Hazeltine and the Walla Walla Community College Women's Basketball program found themselves on the west side of the state this past weekend for the Shoreline Crossover Tournament, where they took on Umpqua Community College, Seattle Elite Prep, and the hosting Dolphins of Shoreline Community College. Before Friday night's action, the Warriors entered the tournament with a 5-1 record.
In the opening game of the tournament, the Warriors took on Umpqua Community College and got off to a quick start, outscoring the Riverhawks 19-16 in the first quarter. Coach Hazeltine and the Warriors took a two point lead into halftime and again came out strong in the third, with the score sitting 54-51 at the conclusion of three periods. Although the Warriors held Umpqua's leading scorer to just 3 points in the final quarter, Umpqua's Jewel Young and Rebekah Beltran got hot in the fourth, scoring 8 and 7, respectively, each to bring the Riverhawks back to take the victory 72-64. Warriors' Brielle Magnuson led all scorers in the contest with 19 points while adding 5 rebounds and an assist.
On Saturday afternoon, Coach Hazeltine and the Warriors squared off with Seattle Elite Prep for their second matchup of the tournament. WWCC got off to a red-hot start, scoring 27 points in the first quarter. Averee Osterhout led the way early on for the Warriors, scoring all 7 of her points in the contest, and adding 2 rebounds, an assist, and a steal in the first quarter. The Warriors took a 41-22 lead into halftime and never looked back. The Warriors' standout sophomore guard, Brielle Magnuson, got it going and finished the game with 22 points and 7 boards - while Sintia Varela added 10 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. Macie Milum also added 11 points, 5 rebounds, an assist, and two steals off the bench for the Warriors on the way to a 67-53, win.
On the final day of the tournament, Coach Hazeltine and the Warriors closed things out in a big way with a thirty-nine point win over the host team in Shoreline Community College. Brielle Magnuson saw the ball go in early and there was no answer from the Dolphins. Magnuson scored 14 of her 24 points in the first, outscoring Shoreline in the opening period, alone. The second quarter was more spread out, seeing buckets from Sintia Varela, Hadley Fraas, Brielle Magnuson, Addy Laible, and Zoe Hermens to take a 37-13 lead into halftime. Macie Milum scored 6 of her 9 points in the contest in the third quarter, helping the Warriors solidify their lead heading into the fourth. Freshman guard, Alahondra Perez, added 6 points, a rebound, an assist, and a steal off the bench in the fourth quarter. The Warriors finished off the win, 65-26.
The Warriors are now 7-2 through their first nine games and return to action December 28th, in the first game of the Lower Columbia Invitational in Longview, WA.
