Warrior Women's Basketball Starts Season Strong with Dominant Performances
Pasco, WA - The Walla Walla Community College Women's Basketball team picked up where they left off with their winning ways, claiming two victories on opening weekend at the Columbia Basin College Opener in Pasco, WA. The Warriors took care of business against Linn-Benton on Friday, winning 70-41, before grabbing another double digit win on Saturday over Peninsula with a score of 59-44. Now, Coach Hazeltine and the Warriors will fix their eyes on the upcoming Warrior Classic, their first home games of the season.
Walla Walla 70 vs. Linn-Benton 41 (Friday, November 14th)
From the start, Walla Walla left no doubt that Friday's season opener was their's to win as at the end of the first quarter, WWCC held a 19-2 lead over Linn-Benton. They would only continue to extend that lead with efficient offense and stout defense, leading 40-13 at halftime and 58-24 at the end of the third quarter. The Warriors shot 37.3% from the field, including a 6 for 16 (37.5%) effort from behind the 3-Point line. They also claimed 36 points from in the paint and out-rebounded Linn-Benton 46-41 in total. Macie Milum led the scoring for WWCC, finishing with 21 points on 8 of 11 shooting, including makes on both of her 3-Point attempts. Logan Sailors was the other Warrior in double figures for the evening, finishing with 12 points to go with her 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 steal.
Walla Walla 59 vs. Peninsula 44 (Saturday, November 15th)
Similar to Friday's game, the Warriors were the first team to score on Saturday and once again never saw a tied score on the scoreboard for the rest of the contest. Peninsula battled back in the middle two quarters, outscoring the Warriors by 4 points, but a 26-14 first quarter lead and strong fourth quarter finish where WWCC outscored Peninsula 14-7 was more than enough for Walla Walla to run away with the victory. The Warriors struggled a bit offensively, finishing with a 27.4 field goal percentage in the game, but their defense made scoring even tougher on their opponent, limiting Peninsula to a 15 of 63 (23.8%) shooting effort, including 3 of 26 (11.5%) from beyond the arc. Logan Sailors was one of the bright spots scoring-wise for Walla Walla, finishing with 23 points and adding 7 rebounds, an assist, and 4 steals to her stat line. Sidnee Geerdes was in double figures in both points and rebounds, adding 12 of each to the team total.
