Spokane hands Warriors four-set volleyball defeat

Walla Walla Community College’s volleyball team appeared to take command with a decisive 25-8 victory over Spokane, evening things up in the second set after a 25-18 loss in the opener of their Northwest Athletic Conference match here on Wednesday.

However, Spokane answered with back-to-back victories, 25-15 and 25-20, to finish off the Warriors in their first regional bout of the season.

“We had plenty of opportunities to win, but made too many mistakes and fell apart,” Walla Walla coach Chelsie Speer said. “It was a disappointing loss. Spokane is a good team, but we also had plenty of opportunities to win.”

Kynady Greear put together a strong performance for the Warriors (15-11 overall, 0-1 in the East) with 11 kills and four blocks. She hit .360.

Teammate Abbey Schwager made 33 assists but the Warriors suffered their second loss in a row after having fallen to Bellevue, 3-1, on Sunday at Everett in a Trojan Invite semifinal.

Prior to the last two setbacks, Walla Walla had won six straight matches.

The Warriors look to get back on track as they challenge regional frontrunners at home this weekend. First-place Columbia Basin (3-0 in the East) drops by on Friday, followed by second-place Wenatchee (2-0) on Saturday.
