Warriors’ run ends in Edmonds title tilt

EDMONDS, Wash. — Walla Walla collected five straight victories here over the weekend at the Edmonds Crossover community college volleyball tournament before running into Chemeketa in the tournament’s championship match.

The Storm turned back the Warriors in the title showdown, 25-21, 25-15, 25-14, spoiling WWCC’s otherwise unbeaten tournament record.

Walla Walla began tournament play with a 25-7, 25-13 romp past Mount Hood, one of Chemeketa’s South Division rivals. The Warriors then took down Puget Sound 25-22, 25-12; they defeated Edmonds 24-26, 25-16, 15-7; they claimed a 25-21, 25-21, 25-13 win over Whatcom in the tourney quarterfinals; and they logged a come-from-behind 20-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-17 win over Lower Columbia in the semis to reach the championship showdown.

The productive weekend enabled the Warriors to improve their season record to 27-15. They are 7-4 in East Region matches and are tied for third place with Spokane heading into Wednesday’s home East match against Big Bend followed by a Friday home match vs. division rival North Idaho

Chemeketa leads the South with an 8-1 record an now stands 27-7 for the year.

Lindsey Carpenter was a tower of strength for the Warriors throughout the tournament, registering 59 kills, eight blocks and 69 digs. She was named to the all-tournament team.

Ocean Bryan also earned all-tourney honors as she accumulated 71 kills to go with four blocks and 15 digs during the six matches.

Ashlin Orosco finished the weekend with 38 kills and six blocks, Emmah Peterson tallied 29 kills and 15 blocks and Hannah Pond recorded 100 digs and put up nearly six assists per set. Abbey Schwager had 182 assists and 47 digs.

“I’m really proud of these girls,” Warriors coach Chelsie Speer said. “They had a great weekend overall.

“We just ran out of steam in the end against a really solid opponent,” the coach added.
