Warrior women 3rd at Yakima Tournament

YAKIMA — The Walla Walla Community College women’s basketball team opened the season at the Yakima Invitational finishing 3rd, beating Whatcom, 65-54 on Sunday. The Warriors also  beat Chemeketa, 71-50, Friday before losing to Centralia, 68-52, Saturday.

In the 3rd place game, five Warriors scored in double-figures led by Devynn Johnson with 14. Rhianna Birch added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Against Centralia, the Warriors were simply outshot. Centralia pumped in 12 3-pointers, while the Warriors could only manage a pair.

“Centralia was better than us, they were more physical and they shot the ball better,” Warrior coach Bobbi Hazeltine said. “It is good for us to play against a good team. It will only make us better.”

The Warriors pummeled Chemeketa by over twenty points and were led by Bailey Nygaard with 16 points, including three from behind the 3-point arc. Courtney Davis scored 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds off the bench for WWCC in the victory.

“It was the first game of the year and we got to play a lot of kids,” Hazeltine said. “It was good for us.”
