Warrior women blowout Yakima

Walla Walla Community College’s Tabitha Wellsandt scored 20 points to lead the Warrior women in their 91-50 win over Yakima Valley, a Northwest Athletic Conference East Region basketball opponent, here Wednesday.

The Warriors (16-6 overall, 5-4 in the league) are now in fifth place in the East Region standings. They had lost their previous two games, and four of their last six, before Wednesday’s blowout of last-place Yakima.

“It was nice to have one of those,” WWCC coach Bobbi Hazeltine said of the rout. “We haven’t had one of those in a long time.”

WWCC’s Kayla Green tallied 16 points, while teammate Cheyan James contributed 14 points and eighth rebounds off the bench.

Marquel Greene added another 13 points.

The Warriors’ Kennedy Corrigan scored eight points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished 12 assists.

WWCC mounted a 45-24 lead at halftime and never looked back.

“We made an effort to focus on our offense, which has been non-existent the last few games,” Hazeltine said. “We talked about finishing and going strong. I thought our posts did a nice job of that. We shared the ball really well … a lot of little things that we had been overlooking.”

The Warriors next play Saturday at Wenatchee Valley against the first-place Knights (19-5 overall, 7-2 in the league), who won their Jan. 16 meeting at the Dietrich Dome, 71-62, snapping WWCC’s 10-game winning steak and starting the Warriors on their recent skid.
