Walla Walla Community College and Columbia Basin College entered Saturday’s NWAC women’s basketball action tied at 7-0 a top the East Division standings. The Hawks had run off 14 consecutive wins while the Warriors came in with a streak of 18 in a row. Something had to give. The Hawks blinked first and the Warriors took over the top spot in the East with a 64-52 win.
The first half saw the Hawks open a three-point lead after one, only to see the Warriors cut the Hawk lead to one, 30-29, at intermission.
The Warrior defense took over in the third. The Warrior defense limited the Hawks to only five points in the third. The complementary Warrior offense did it’s part as it scored 19 point in the third and WWCC took a 48-35 edge to the fourth.
“We made a few defensive adjustments at half time,” Warrior coach Bobbi Hazeltine said. “Our defense was real, real good and held CBC to five in the third. They (CBC) are a really good team. We just came out with more defense (in the second half).”
The Warriors held serve in the fourth to only lose one point of their lead and take over sole possession of first place in the East with the 64-52 win.
Jade Skidmore led the Warriors with 21 points, 14 rebounds, and three steals.
Cierra Jo McKeown finished with 18 points and nine rebounds. Adrianna Peralez finshed with 13 points.
Kortney Hutchison got the defensive game ball for her defensive effort on the Hawks’ leading scorer, Alexis Castro.
“We put Kortney on Castro,” Hazeltine added. “Everybody played good defense. Kortney held Castro to 12 who came in averaging 20.”
The Warriors, 8-0 in the East, travel to Spokane Wednesday.
