Warrior women lose to Clark

12/15/13

PORTLAND — Walla Walla sophomore guard Josie Jordan came off the bench to score 28 points here Sunday during the final day of a community college women’s basketball tournament.

But it wasn’t nearly enough as a talented Clark squad rumbled to a 92-72 victory that left the Warriors with a 1-2 record for the tournament and 5-3 mark overall.

“They are good,” WWCC coach Bobbi Hazeltine said of the Penguins. “And we are young. That’s the biggest difference in the two teams.

“We played pretty well and stayed with them for the first 10 minutes,” Hazeltine said. “Then they went on a huge run and it was pretty much over at halftime.”

The Penguins, who had six players score in double figures, led 56-30 at the intermission. Nicolette Bond led Clark’s balanced attack with 16 points.

Jordan scored her 28 points on 11-for-15 shooting from the floor, and she was 5-for-8 from beyond the 3-point line. Her scoring total was 10 points more than WWCC’s five starters combined.

But it wasn’t her team’s offense that had Hazeltine in a stew.

“Defense has always been a strength of Walla Walla teams, and you just don’t give up 90-some points,” she said. “We are going to have to rethink what we are doing defensively as a team.

“Individually, some of the girls have grown,” she added. “But 98 points (allowed) in an NWAACC game is pretty bad. It was pretty tough to suffer through. We are used to being on the other end of those, and to be on this end is pretty humbling.

“So we will go back to the drawing board and try to get better.” “Highline is another ranked team,” Hazeltine said. “Everybody in the tournament we are going to is good, so it doesn’t get any easier.”
