MOSES LAKE — A first half of solid defense, coupled with a quartet of players scoring in double figures, added up to a 91-62 Walla Walla Community College women’s basketball victory over Big Bend here Saturday.
WWCC pulled to 3-0 in the Northwest Athletic Conference East Region and 15-1 overall entering a 2 p.m. home-court regional matchup against Yakima Valley today in a game at the Dietrich Dome. Admission for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day tilt is free, WWCC coach Bobbi Hazeltine noted.
In Saturday’s win, the Warriors limited the Vikings to 25 points in the first half and led 46-25 at intermission.
“We had a pretty good halftime lead and just kinda coasted the second half,” Hazeltine said. “We played really good defense in the first half.”
Sophomore Jade Skidmore was all over the court for the Warriors and led the way with a triple-double: 18 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. The point guard also had a pair of steals.
Cierra Jo McKeown was WWCC’s leading scorer with 21 points. Teresa Acock was 5-for-5 from behind the 3-point arc and totaled 19 points and Courtney Hutchison was a fourth Warrior in double figures with 11 points.
“It was just a great team effort,” Hazeltine said. “We haven’t played that well in awhile … we’ve had a few struggles but we came ready to play today.”
The Warriors committed 13 fouls to the Vikings’ nine fouls.
“We fouled, but we were trying to draw a lot of charges,” Hazeltine said. “We got called for a lot of blocks. We put ‘em at the free throw line a little more than we wanted, but other than that we played really good defense.”
