PENDLETON — Blue Mountain Community College’s Timberwolves opened the game playing zone defense here Saturday.
Walla Walla CC’s women’s basketball team shot them out of it.
Cierra Jo McKeown scored a game-high 26 points for the Warriors, including six-for-nine from three-point territory. Teammate Teresa Acock hit 6-for-10 from long range. The Timberwolves, who were outscored 37-11 in the first quarter, reverted to a man-to-man defense as WWCC went on to win its 23rd straight game, this one a 99-50 Northwest Athletic Conference East Region triumph.
“We have a couple of good shooters, and they just didn’t miss for awhile,” Warriors coach Bobbi Hazeltine said. “We were clicking pretty well tonight.”
WWCC hit 40-of-75 shots from the floor, including 12-of-24 from beyond the three-point arc.
Jade Skidmore and McKenzie Gunter tallied 11 points apiece for WWCC while Kortney Hutchison scored 10, giving the Warriors five players in double-figure scoring. Miah Slater scored 18 points to pace Blue Mountain.
Gunter also had a game-high 10 rebounds, giving the WWCC freshman the first double-double of her career.
At 13-0, WWCC clinched at least a tie for the NWAC East Region title, which would be the Warriors’ second straight Eastern crown. Columbia Basin, currently the No. 2 team at 11-3 in the East, hosts WWCC at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Pasco.
