Warrior women split on the weekend

WALLA WALLA — The Walla Walla Community College women’s basketball team beat Portland Community College, 77-62, during the opening day of the Warrior Classic before falling to Peninsula on Saturday.

Saturday’s loss ended a 26-game home winning streak, which spanned more than three years, for the Warriors.

The Warriors held a 63-56 lead with five minutes remaining against the Pirates, but Peninsula’s full-court pressure resulted in an 8-0 run that WWCC could not full recover from.

“We played 35 minutes of really good basketball and for whatever reason — we didn’t at the end,” WWCC coach Bobbi Hazeltine said. “We made some uncharacteristic mistakes and gave up some offensive rebounds but we were playing a quality opponent.”

Devynn Johnson led the Warriors in both games, as she finished with 17 against Peninsula and 20 in Friday’s game.

Walla Walla had four scorers finish in double figures against Portland, as Karli McHone came up with 18, Haley Hutchinson added 15 and Bailey Nygaard finished with 10.

Kennedy Corrigan finished with a game-high 13 assists in Friday’s win.

The Warriors travel to Chemeketa on Friday.
