Warriors win a pair

12/14/13

PORTLAND — Walla Walla Community College’s women’s basketball team improved its record to 5-2 here Saturday afternoon with a 67-58 victory over Portland.

The Warriors opened a three-game weekend road trip with a 66-51 win over the George Fox junior varsity on Friday night.

Post MeShel Rad tallied a game-high 22 points in Saturday’s triumph. She made 6-of-10 shots from the field and converted 10-of-12 free throws.

Devynn Johnson added 11 points to the Walla Walla cause and Amy DeLong hauled down a game-high 18 rebounds.

The Warriors led by only three, 29-26, at halftime on Saturday.

“We knew it would be tough,” WWCC coach Bobbi Hazeltine said. “I scheduled it (the weekend road trip) this way to make it tough on us.

“We were coming off a seven o’clock game (Friday) night and didn’t have a lot of energy (in the first half Saturday),” Hazeltine said. “We played with a lot energy in the second half. MeShel played really well. Amy DeLong was a workhorse on the boards.

“We kept balls alive,” Hazeltine said of the second-half surge. “We got a lot more rebounds. We got out and ran, got them a little bit tired, and were getting second-chance shots.”

The Warriors outrebounded the Panthers 52-25.

DeLong led Walla Walla against George Fox with 21 points and Johnson contributed a double-double — 14 points and 11 rebounds.
