Walla Walla, WA – The Walla Walla Community College women roared to a 12-0 lead and won by a similar margin against Big Bend Saturday, cruising to an 82-71 East Region victory.

“The 12-0 start may have been our best three minutes of basketball that we’ve played,” WWCC coach Bobbi Hazeltine said. “They (Big Bend) are a high scoring 3-point shooting team and you can blow a lead in a minute and we did.”

The inside trio of Amy DeLong, Jessica Siler, and MeShel Rad shouldered the offensive load for the Warriors. DeLong scored a game-high 23 points, Siler added 19, and Rad contributed 12.

“We had a height advantage,” Hazeltine said. “Our game plan was to go inside and Amy, Jessica, and Meshed played really well.”

At the defensive end, the Warriors looked to contain the Vikings from the perimeter and for Bailey Nygaard to keep the Vikings Riley Jemmett in check. Mission accomplished. The Warriors held the Vikings to 9-of-32 shooting from behind the arc, and Nygaard held Jemmett, who came in averaging 17, to only six.

“We gave up 71, but did a nice job defending the 3,” Hazeltine commented.

Nygaard also scored 20 points from the guard position for WWCC.

The Warriors improve to 5-1 in the East and visit 6-0 Columbia Basin College Wednesday.
