WWCC women pound Peninsula in Centralia

CENTRALIA, Wash. — Walla Walla closed out the pre-Christmas portion of its women’s basketball season on a successful note during the third and final day of a Northwest Athletic Conference crossover tournament here Sunday.

The Walla Wallans pounded Peninsula 82-52 to hike their season record to 10-1. The Warriors defeated Mount Hood 86-49 and host Centralia 59-47 during the first two days of the crossover tourney.

“We played pretty well, obviously,” WWCC coach Bobbi Hazeltine said. “We shot it really well.”

Cierra Jo McKeown connected on 11-of-18 shots from the floor for 29 points and Teresa Acock was 6-for-9 from the field and finished with 16. They were a combined 11-for-18 from 3-point distance.

“Most of the games this season, it’s been one or the other,” Hazeltine said of her two sophomore sharpshooters. “But in this game they were both on fire right from the start and took Peninsula out of the game.”

The Warriors led 26-14 at the end of the first quarter and 47-28 at halftime.

“They were in a zone and we don’t see a lot of zones because we shoot it so well,” the coach said of the Penguins. “In the second half they tried to man us, but it’s pretty hard to man us because we have so many kids who can score.”

Jade Skidmore, another sophomore, was also in double figures with 14 points, and she led the Warriors with 10 rebounds.

Jamellia Clark, a 6-foot-1 post, led the Penguins with 18 points and 17 rebounds.

“If we have trouble defensively it is against a big post because we don’t have a big post,” Hazeltine said. “The tallest player in our lineup is 5-10. But we are ready to zone people if we have to.”

The Warriors are now off until after Christmas when they travel to Salem, Ore.,for a non-league tournament. WWCC faces Lane Dec. 29 and takes on host Chemeketa the following day.
