WWCC women unbeaten at Crossover

The Warriors edge host Centralia on Friday, and then crush Mt. Hood on Saturday.

CENTRALIA, Wash. — Walla Walla Community College raced into today’s third round of the Centralia Crossover women’s basketball tournament with a perfect 2-0 record.

The Warriors squeaked out a 59-47 win over Centralia to open crossover play on Friday, and overwhelmed Mt. Hood, 86-49, Saturday.

“Centralia’s pretty good,” WWCC coach Bobbi Hazeltine said. “We had a good defense first half, and then we switched things up with a few kids. Teresa Acock hit some big shots for us. We came out and played better in the second half.

“Today, we came out and scored a lot,” she continued. “We got to play everybody. It was really good with a lot of scoring. We had two off our bench end up in double figures.”

In Friday’s opener, the Warriors had to overcome a 15-10 first quarter deficit, but a 15-4 second quarter Warrior run took care of that as the Warriors took a 25-19 lead to intermission. After an even third, WWCC put this one away with an 18-point fourth.

Cierra Jo McKeown led a trio of Warriors in double digits. McKeown led all acorers with 19. Teresa Acock finished with 15 and Jade Skidmore chipped in 12.

Skidmore scored a double double as she led the Warriors to a 36-26 edge on the glass with 13 rebounds.

The sailing was smoother Saturday. The Warriors raced to a 27-18 lead after the first 10 minutes, and were not threatened the rest of the way in posting the 86-49 win.

10 Warriors scored with five hitting double digits. McKeown led the way with 16. McKenzie Gunter and Kaileigh Dietrich-Denton came off the Warrior bench to finish in double digits. Gunter scored 14 and Dietrich-Denton added 12. Adrianna Peralez chipped in 13 and Skidmore added 10.
