Barajas nets hat trick as Warrior women win

Reserve forward Klarissa Barajas tallied a hat trick Saturday afternoon as Walla Walla Community College clinched the Northwest Athletic Conference’s Eastern Region title with a 5-1 victory over second-place North Idaho at Warrior Field.

The win improved the Warriors’ unblemished league record to 13-0 and overall mark to 17-0-1.

The visiting Cardinals stunned WWCC by scoring the game’s first goal. Aunika Capps put NIC in front with an unassisted goal in the 23rd minute.

Barajas used a Dominique Velazuez assist to net the equalizer 36 minutes into the opening half.

Velazquez set up Haley Wammock for a tie-breaking goal nine minutes later and just second before the halftime whistle to give Walla Walla a 2-1 edge.

Defender Demeree McLean received a top-of-the 18 pass from Madison Hemenway four minutes into the second half and buried a 40-yard boot into the back of the net to increase the Warriors’ lead to 3-1.

Barajas closed out the scoring with goals in the 56th and 68th minutes. Chelsea Marozik assisted on Barajas’ first goal of the second half and Velazquez aided the latter.

WWCC closes out the regular season Wednesday at Columbia Basin.
